Google
NBA All-Star Game

live event | Jumbotron Display

The brief

Google is the official trends insight partner of the NBA, and ahead of the 2022 NBA All-Star Game they wanted to showcase that partnership in the arena. The ask: an animated trivia game to be shown on the jumbotron during halftime, with live hosts on the court encouraging fans to play along. Questions were built from search trends, asking fans which topics and teams garnered the most searches.

The insight & idea

Venue graphics are a different beast from content built for phone screens. The work has to hold up at a massive scale, stand out in a loud and chaotic environment, and keep the energy high for a crowd that's there to have a good time — not to watch an ad. The animation needed to feel like it belonged in the arena and look dynamic and polished enough to meet the NBA's production quality standards.

The execution

Working alongside Nick Lerum within Hook's larger Google team, I contributed animation and rendering across the trivia sequences.

The project landed well enough that Google came back for more. We created multiple variants for game day flexibility, then used it as a template for the WNBA All-Star Game later that year.
